The suspect was identified to CBS News by law enforcement sources as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California.
Authorities have yet to identify the suspect's motive, but acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said he was likely targeting members of the Trump administration.
In a news conference on Saturday, Muriel Bowser thanked law enforcement "who did their jobs tonight and made sure that all guests were safe."
Cole Allen, 31, sent an email to family members shortly before the annual press gala, officials told CBS News.
