Residents of an English village were evacuated as a large sinkhole swallowed parts of the town’s main street up to the edge of homes.

A large sinkhole has appeared in a southern English village, swallowing up at least one garden and forcing authorities to evacuate residents from around 30 homes.

Two large holes along a road in Surrey, England, led to the evacuation of 30 homes, according to the local council. The county declared a major incident.

Surrey County Council's highways boss Matt Furniss said the sinkhole had stabilised but it could be months before families were allowed back into their homes.
