A Fulton County sheriff’s deputy working an off-duty job was injured in a shootout in Atlanta’s West End on Monday.

ATLANTA, GA — The GBI is investigating after a part time Fulton County sheriff’s deputy is shot and a suspect is killed. The deputy, identified as Lt. Gerald Johnson, was working an off-duty security job on Monday in the West End when a few people flagged him down saying they were injured in a robbery at the Easy Rental on Lee Street.

A Fulton County deputy was injured in a shooting in southwest Atlanta on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Shortly after being waved down, Lt. (Gerald) Johnson approached an encounter with a perpetrator who had an assault-type rifle. They exchanged gunfire,” Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat told C hannel 2’s Brittany Kleinpeter during a Monday night news conference. The gunman and Johnson were both injured. The shooter later died from their injuries.
