The D.C. Council voted on changes to Initiative 82, a controversial piece of legislation that changed how tipped workers were paid.The council vote took time, as members were embroiled in other debates.

Angry protests erupted as D.C. Councilmembers voted Monday to pass a compromise amendment partially repealing Initiative 82, and the chamber went into lockdown amid the uproar. Hours of debate surrounded the council’s vote to approve an almost $22 billion budget for 2026.

DC’s tipped wage will not be phased out by 2027 as scheduled. Instead, the DC Council voted 7 to 5 today to partially repeal Initiative 82, slowing down increases in the tipped wage and ultimately capping it at 75 percent of the full minimum wage from 2034 on.
