Novo Nordisk’s new Wegovy pill hit the market this week. The Danish drug maker, best known for GLP-1 injections like Ozempic and Wegovy, is now the first company to manufacture and receive FDA approval for an oral GLP-1 pill for weight management.

TORONTO — Novo Nordisk Canada is considering competing with generic versions of its brand-name Ozempic and Wegovy drugs by introducing renamed, lower-priced copies of the medications. Health Canada approved the company’s submissions for Plosbrio and Poviztra on Dec. 22.

Novo Nordisk’s daily oral pill, which starts at 1.5 milligrams, will be available for $149 a month for self-paying patients, while a 4 milligram dose will be available for the same price until April 15 of this year, then will rise to $199 a month, according to the company’s website.

The FDA-approved weight loss drug offers an oral alternative to invasive injections with similar effectiveness.

Drugmaker Novo Nordisk said the prescription medicine can be found at a range of pharmacies, including CVS and Costco, as well as some telehealth providers.
