Construction workers at the San Diego International Airport’s Terminal 1 dug up a grenade Thursday, prompting a response from law enforcement.

In a surprising discovery, construction workers at San Diego International Airport unearthed what they believe to be "an old, inert hand grenade" in the area of Terminal 1, a spokesperson for the Port of San Diego confirmed Thursday afternoon.

The incident did not impact the airport's operations since the ordnance did not have the capability to explode, the Port says.

A record 25.24 million people traveled through SAN last year, surpassing the previous high of 25.18 million passengers in 2019.

Before the new Terminal 1 opens later this year, people should plan for another round of construction-related traffic interruptions when driving in and out of the airport.
