The next round of winter weather is on the way for the U.S., impacting at least 25 states and potentially causing snow showers as far south as North Carolina and Tennessee.

With more chances of snow moving in over the next week, this season seems to be the return of big, snowy winters. Has that really been the case? What do the previous winter season’s look like with snowfall totals up to this point?

A pair of storm systems sweeping across the country this week will bring snow, ice and thunderstorms, forecasters said.

Lake effect snow, intense rain and chilly temperatures dominate the forecasts for different parts of the U.S., before and after the new year arrives.

The Keweenaw Peninsula, jutting northward into Lake Superior, is already closing in on 120 inches of snow, according to Keweenaw County snowfall data. As of Monday, Jan. 5, 119.25 inches of snow had fallen, marking a particularly snowy start to the season.

While lower snowfall totals are now likely, a dangerous coating of ice could turn roads treacherous across a large stretch of New Jersey tonight into Saturday.

Much of Utah will see its first significant snowfall of the season as a storm moves in across the state overnight Wednesday, with snow likely affecting morning commutes on Thursday.
