Parents and educators are receiving notifications about the breach, but it’s still unclear exactly how many people have been affected or what information was leaked.

In an FAQ obtained by TechCrunch, PowerSchool confirms it negotiated with the threat actors responsible for the breach.

An education software provider used by Alabama schools that has access to student names, addresses and email addresses has been compromised, school officials confirmed. PowerSchool serves districts throughout the nation and had a national cybersecurity incident nationwide, according to Newsweek.

The breach is the latest in a series of high-profile cybersecurity incidents affecting K-12 schools, which are a top target of hackers and are uniquely vulnerable to cyberattacks.

New Trier said the data that was accessed included names and school ID numbers. No current students' Social Security numbers were accessed, but some former students' were.

A spokesperson for the company said an "unauthorized actor" accessed and stole sensitive customer information.

School officials learned of the “potential cybersecurity incident” on Tuesday, Needham Public Schools Superintendent Dan Gutekanst said in a statement.
