Coming out of a Statement Saturday full of upsets and prove-it moments for would-be contenders, let’s get a check-up on the Top 25 college football rankings heading into Week 12, courtesy of the ESPN analytics department.

ESPN's computer-generated college football rankings, known as the Football Power Index (FPI), have left fans scratching their heads every week throughout the 2024 season. Not much changed after Week 10, as the FPI continued to confuse fans with its strange rankings .

Calling the Auburn Tigers 2024-2025 football season upsetting would be an understatement. Hugh Freeze and company lost again last Saturday, this time at the hands of familiar foe Diego Pavia and a Vanderbilt team that had not beaten the Tigers at home since 1948.

According to ESPN, FPI is defined as “a predictive rating system designed to measure team strength and project performance going forward.” In the FPI, nine of the top 25 teams are in the SEC, including six of the top twelve. The SEC is again looking like the best conference in college football

ESPN has updated its Football Power Index (FPI) rankings after an eventful college football Week 10, during which seven ranked teams went down. Among the ranked teams that lost on Saturday included No. 3 Penn State, No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 11 Clemson, No. 11 Iowa State, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 18 Pittsburgh and No. 24 Illinois.
