A camping mat on a crowded, hard floor may not seem like much to some but for people living outside, it's a lifeline.

A few dozen people napped on sleeping mats laid out in neat rows inside Tony Rinella Hall at the Ascension Catholic Church in Southeast Portland on Thursday afternoon. Volunteers were prepared for dozens more to arrive by the evening with forecasters predicting the morning snow could turn to freezing rain.
