The Nashville office of the National Weather Service upgraded the winter storm watch to a warning ahead of expected snow and ice this weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for central Ohio counties as the region is expected to see between 6 and 12 inches of snow.

Snow, ice storms and frigid conditions are forecast for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

The massive storm dumped heavy snow and ice across a huge swath of the United States, leaving more than 800,000 homes without power.

There's more than a 50% chance Nashville will be significantly impacted by ice, making travel extremely dangerous.

“Dangerous cold comes this week with several nights featuring single digit temperatures and wind chills below zero,” the National Weather Service said early Monday. “It’s quite rare to get a stretch of temperatures this cold for so long. Take precautions if headed out.”

Chad Omitt, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Topeka, visited Eye on NE Kansas to offer perspective on the winter weather.

“It will be after 7 or 8 p.m. when things start to trend over to frozen precipitation, and definitely after midnight is when it should be solidly freezing rain,” National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Willis said Saturday from his office in Peachtree City.
