After months of delays, what was once the world’s fastest passenger liner his making the first leg of the ship’s journey to her new underwater home off the coast of Florida.

After several delays, the iconic ship SS United States is tentatively scheduled to begin its move to Florida this week.

U.S. Coast Guard has requested additional details about moving the vessel, and no new departure date has been set.

The SS United States’ on-again, off-again departure is on again. And it starts Thursday morning, unless delayed by an overnight storm expected to deliver a wintry mix to the city.

This time, the SS United States’ start of a much-anticipated departure to Mobile, Alabama, scheduled for Thursday was canceled at the request of the U.S. Coast Guard. There is no new move date.

The SS United States has been cleared to sail from south Philadelphia to Mobile, Ala., in preparation for its eventual sinking in northwest Florida to become the world's largest artificial reef.

The ship could leave Philly by Saturday, weather permitting. Things are allegedly looking up for the SS United States and the vessel could be on the road to its temporary home by Saturday, with a micro-move from one Philadelphia pier to another scheduled for early Thursday morning.

The Coast Guard had concerns about the SS United States' scheduled move from Pier 82 to Pier 80 in Philadelphia, sources said.

The ship is scheduled to begin its move to Okaloosa County, Florida, on Thursday and depart Philadelphia on Saturday morning.
