The D.C. Council voted on changes to Initiative 82, a controversial piece of legislation that changed how tipped workers were paid.The council vote took time, as members were embroiled in other debates.

DC’s tipped wage will not be phased out by 2027 as scheduled. Instead, the DC Council voted 7 to 5 today to partially repeal Initiative 82, slowing down increases in the tipped wage and ultimately capping it at 75 percent of the full minimum wage from 2034 on.

The reopened conversation about I-82 comes after the Council voted in June to pause the pay bump — from $10 to $12 per hour — until October, which was prompted by a push from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser in her original budget proposal to repeal I-82. Bowser’s proposal sought to eliminate I-82 and revert the tipped minimum wage to $5.95.
