Authorities across the United States are investigating after racist text messages – some with references to “slave catchers” and “picking cotton” reminiscent of the country’s painful and bigoted past – have been received by children,

Researchers at the Bridging Divides Initiative, a nonpartisan think tank at Princeton that studies and attempts to mitigate political violence, wrote in a rapid response analysis that the language of the texts appears to have been drawn from 4chan and from a now-deleted subreddit that was removed by Reddit’s moderators.

Dauphin County residents are among an unknown number of Black people across the country to receive racist text messages saying they were selected to pick cotton one day after the nation elected Donald J. Trump as its next president.

"Congratulations! you have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation," reads one version of the messages. "Please be prepared to leave your home November 24, 2024 you will be picked up at 8am sharp in our white van. Also you will sit with Group C Have a nice day. Sincerely, A TRUMP SUPPORTER."

People throughout the D.C. area and across the country reported receiving racist spam text messages the day after the election that told them to report to plantations to pick cotton.
