In a statement responding to Saturday protests, Mayor Keith Wilson pledged that Portland police will uphold the law in the city, but will “not be used as agents of ICE.”

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson released a statement Sunday addressing ICE protests following the No Kings demonstration in the city.

“Portland has not requested and does not require the intervention of the National Guard,” Wilson said in the statement. He noted that National Guard members and U.S. Marines deployed to Los Angeles under the order of helping ICE and protest management have only inflamed tensions in that city.

An estimated 50,000 protesters rallied in Portland's Waterfront Park on Saturday, June 14 for a “No Kings” demonstration, which was part of a nationwide series of protests against the Trump administration.

Trump sent federal officers into Portland to quell riots five years ago. A tired city — watching events in LA — hopes it won’t happen again.

Hundreds of protesters have gathered outside of the Portland U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building after a “No Kings” march in the downtown and Central Eastside area brought tens of thousands of demonstrators on Saturday afternoon.

Activists plan more events Tuesday in New York, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. A curfew was imposed across downtown L.A. until 6 a.m.
