All that remains of the Kaua'i O'o are a few photos and this haunting song. The bird was last recorded in 1987, and habitat destruction and invasive species were the major causes of its demise. Today, 33 of Hawai'i's remaining 44 endemic birds are listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA); 10 of those have not been seen for decades and are likely extinct.
