Here's a time-lapse taken yesterday of the short daylight hours around the winter solstice in Fairbanks. Today, Fairbanks will only see 3 hours and 41 minutes of daylight, and the sun will only rise 2° above the horizon. You may notice the distorted appearance of some of the hills and buttes south of Fairbanks. This is a Fata Morgana, which was created by strong temperature inversion present over Fairbanks. Winter closes as 10th coldest in Fairbanks; More snow for Southeast

The impending winter storm for the Interior and Fairbanks is arriving. The Pedro Dome Radar near Fairbanks shows bands of snow moving east across the area. Around 2-3 inches of snow have been observed through 9am. Snow will continue to fall today, with snow becoming heavy at times this evening and especially early Sunday morning.
