A group of chemicals called PFAS were invented in the 1930's and used primarily for their heat resistance properties. Notably, Aqueous Film Forming Firefighting Foam (AFFF) was used by the Air Force at bases across the country. Use of this firefighting foam led to the contamination of groundwater with PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals".
