Red-tailed hawks have that name for a reason - red tails! But those distinctive red feathers don't actually come in until they molt sometime after their first year. This red-tailed hawk arrived last week after a homeowner found her grounded in their backyard, unable to fly. Her left wing was visibly drooping on intake, but radiographs taken by @animalgeneral revealed no fractures. The likely cause is soft-tissue or nerve damage, and we are hoping for the best. She is exceptionally feisty, and her determination is important — nearly half of all red-tailed hawks do not survive their first year, so every strong survivor is vital to the future of the species.
