Mammary (breast) cancer in pets is very different from humans. ⁠ ⁠ A dog (female or male) actually has ten mammary glands, also known as a mammary chain, down their torso. So a routine full “underbelly” physical exam from under their armpit down to the inner thigh is the main way to catch lumps and bumps there early.⁠ ⁠ You can do this check when they’re sleeping or as you’re petting them, and luckily, to them, it just seems like a simple and happy belly rub.
