Venner was the last leader of the Fifth Monarchists, a millenarian group who believed Christ’s rule on Earth was imminent. After an earlier failed attempt to overthrow Oliver Cromwell in 1657, Venner led a final, desperate uprising in London against the newly restored monarchy of King Charles II. The rebellion began on 6 January 1661 and lasted just four days before government forces crushed it.
